After Months of Quarantine, Nurse Proposes to Longtime Girlfriend

Advocate Pic for Monday

One of the many sacrifices frontline medical workers have to make while helping treat patients during the current global pandemic is having to self-isolate to prevent the possible spread of the COVID-19 to their immediate loved ones. That was a reality that New York-based musician and ICU nurse Alyssa Kayhill had to face when she and her longtime girlfriend Anhlinh Trinh had to quarantine away from each other for three whole months.

While being away from your partner for that long can really take an emotional toll, thanks to Kayhill’s sister Kristie Loscalzo and the support of a local, New York neighborhood, the couple got an epic reunion — and a proposal was involved.

According to LGBTQ Nation, Loscalzo organized for Kayhill and Trinh (who have been together for eight years) to finally see each other at a public courtyard outside of the property where Loscalzo lives. With the help of the property managers, Loscalzo was able to get her neighbors involved to witness and cheer on Kayhill and Trinh’s long-awaited reunion that took place Monday.

“We have been extremely proud of her, always as a nurse, but especially during COVID,” Loscalzo said in a statement to LGBTQ Nation. “Our family has always been very proud of Alyssa, but seeing her step up and really do the right thing for all of these people has just made us even more proud.”

She continued:

“We really did try to just take it day by day and encourage her and support her in every way possible and let her know that we loved her and we were proud of her for everything she was doing.”

When the time came for Trinh to arrive to the reunion, Kayhill — and a group of supportive neighbors — were already waiting for her, and once the two saw each other again, Kayhill got on one knee and proposed.

Watch Alyssa and Linh’s romantic reunion and public proposal in the video below.

Later at BJ’s place, they see on the late news that Darcy has been murdered in what appears to be a mugging. Stacey is hysterical and spends the night with BJ. ‘Shakedown’ by and for queer black women!

mw_logo-1

Leilah Weinraub’s acclaimed documentary is this month’s Reel Affirmations Xtra Film Series selection

Metro Weekly Pic

“The women are sexy, they’re fine,” declares one enthusiastic patron at the weekly underground ladies-for-ladies party that provides the title of Leilah Weinraub’s acclaimed documentary Shakedown. The Shakedown parties, featuring a tight team of female exotic dancers known as the Angels, are long since past. But Weinraub’s film, this month’s Reel Affirmations Xtra Film Series selection, captures the lightning-in-a-bottle thrill of freedom and belonging that the events brought to an underserved population within the Los Angeles LGBTQ community of the early ’00s. As that same lovely partygoer points out in the film, “there’s not that many gay clubs where you can go and just be yourself, and that’s in the hood. Every other club is in Hollywood or Santa Monica. It’s like, you need somewhere that’s in the hood.”

Weinraub, a biracial black filmmaker and artist who grew up in L.A., says it took effort at the time to connect with a scene that represented her and her preferences. “Shakedown was underground, and I had to look for it,” she says. And she recognized that people who don’t find themselves represented in a space, have to create that space for themselves.

“They had to know that it was not going to be something that someone else was going to do for them. They had to see it, and invent it, and make it happen,” she says. “That’s one thing I was trying to deliver in the film, is a legend or a map to autonomy in a way. And that it’s not really given. It’s something you have to decide and make. And it comes together. There’s a genesis.”

Shakedown reflects not only the fruits of lesbian party promoter Ronnie-Ron’s DIY labors, but the end of her party as well. However, that might not spell the end of the story for Weinraub, who’s considering Shakedown for a narrative feature adaptation.

“I love the story, and the people in it, and the world,” she says. “And it was a really important piece of work for me because it taught me…a lot of different things. But the process taught me how to be a director. And so if I was to be able to work with the story more, I would be lucky, I think.”

Shakedown is not rated, and screens virtually via online portal starting Friday, May 29. Virtual tickets are $12, and good for 72 hours. Visit www.reelaffirmationsfilmfestival.vhx.tv.

Study: Seeing LGBTQ+ People in Ads, Media Makes Viewers More Accepting

subscribe

Zola Ad

A same-sex marriage scene in a Zola ad

Seeing LGBTQ+ people in ads, television shows, and films leads to greater acceptance.

A new study from GLAAD and Procter & Gamble, “LGBTQ Inclusion in Advertising and Media,” found that straight cisgender people who had been exposed to LGBTQ+ people in media over the past few years were more likely to accept members of this demographic and be supportive of the issues they face.

The national survey, held between November and December of last year, gathered responses from 2,031 non-LGBTQ+ U.S. adults (18 and over) through Cint, the world’s largest sample exchange platform. It found that among those exposed to LGBTQ+ folks in media, 48 percent reported being more accepting of gays and lesbians, compared with a 35 percent acceptance rate among those who had not.

For those who had recently seen LGBTQ+ representation, acceptance rates were also higher toward bisexual people (45 percent versus 31 percent), nonbinary people (41 percent versus 30 percent), and equal rights for LGBTQ+ people (80 percent versus 70 percent).

The power of visibility also extended to personal relationships. The survey found that 72 percent of those who had recently seen LGBTQ+ representation reported being comfortable with learning the existence of LGBTQ+ family members, compared to 66 percent.

Additionally, 79 percent of the LGBTQ+ exposed reported being comfortable with having a rainbow family as neighbors (compared to 72 percent), 69 percent would be comfortable starting a conversation with a person whose gender was ambiguous (compared to 60 percent), and 73 percent would be comfortable with learning their doctor is gay or bi (compared to 67 percent).

Overwhelmingly, respondents also said seeing LGBTQ+ people in ads reflected highly on the company — 82 percent said it demonstrated a value for all types of diversity, and 85 percent saw a commitment to offering products for all kinds of customers.

“The findings of this study send a strong message to brands and media outlets that including LGBTQ people in ads, films, and TV is good for business and good for the world,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, an organization that promotes positive LGBTQ+ representation in media. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, when media consumption is up and when media outlets serve as lifelines for LGBTQ people in isolation, companies should recognize that now is the right time to grow the quality and quantity of LGBTQ people in advertising.”

With the release of the findings, P&G Chief Brand Officer Marc Pritchard committed to “building LGBTQ marketing into the fabric of how we build brands by understanding invaluable insights that not only responsibly represent the values and culture of the LGBTQ community, but also link closely to the character of our brands — never stereotyping, never misappropriating. But we all have a lot to learn and we are truly at the beginning of our journey to master LGBTQ inclusion in our brand-building efforts.”

P&G is the world’s largest advertiser, with a portfolio of household products including Bounty paper towels, Crest toothpaste, Febreze, and Olay moisturizer.

With the report’s numbers underscoring the importance of visibility, GLAAD, P&G, and the Association of National Advertisers’ Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing announced they would be developing best practices and standards for the advertising industry in regard to LGBTQ+ inclusion.
