It seemed to glow all over, but without any visible light sources. It was smooth and featureless with just a surface that seemed to be emitting light in all directions. Then an opening appeared in the side of the huge thing. It was a roughly rectangular panel that seemed to be hinged on the bottom, forming a curved ramp that extended slowly from the opening.

 She couldn’t see into the object through the opening, because a dazzling light came from the interior. Then she saw a silhouette of a woman – or what appeared to be a woman – in the “doorway.” It walked down the ramp fairly quickly, and when it stepped off the ramp onto the ground and approached her car, it was holding out a hand toward Rebecca and said, “Everything is going to be alright” then Rebecca’s world went dark.

Two college girls, Diana and her Pakistani girlfriend Inaya get separated in Iran when Diana is mistaken for a CIA operative and arrested and sentenced to twenty-five years of solitary confinement. Her friend Inaya is released and sent back to the USA to resume her studies. Her imprisonment is unbearable, poor food, locked in her cell for twenty-three hours a day with an hour of outside exercise.

The worse part of her imprisonment is the treatment by the prison guards that sneak into her cell and inflict unimaginable abuse to the young girl. She discovers resisting the guards is pointless and uses a different tactic that improves her treatment, and her food rations. Certain guards respond to her new behavior and ease up on the young girl.

Eventually after several years the error of her arrest is discovered and through the world press, Iran is forced to exonerate Diana and return her to the United States where she is reunited with her girlfriend Inaya who has been waiting patiently for her return. They have a lot of catching up to do.

Silk is a young woman afflicted with incapacitating birth defects who has done her best to work around her problems, though at twenty-three she is still trying to get through high school. Her physical issues have had her in and out of medical care since birth. The bad news is the symptoms are all that can be treated but not the causes.

Struggling to make her way home from school, her fate just keeps getting worse. She is abducted by creatures in a huge blue and gray sphere and whisked away to their home planet for study.  While being transported, a being, calling itself Ranger, comes to communicate with Silk, it tells silk one of the purposes of the abduction was to see if she can be ‘repaired’. To what end the alien didn’t elaborate other than to indicate a trip though a mysterious portal would be necessary.

While waiting for alien to decide her disposition, it strikes Silk that maybe fate didn’t take a dump on her, may fate had smiled upon her in its own strange way. Human medical procedures could never make her whole again, perhaps through alien intervention she could be ‘repaired’ as Ranger had suggested. When the alien returned to relate her options, Silk readily accepted everything part and parcel not worried about ramifications.
