Merritt had moved from a small town in the Ozark Mountains to the “big city” of Joplin, Missouri, ostensibly to go to the state college there. Instead, unknown to her strict religious parents, the twenty-four-year-old had gotten a job waiting tables in a restaurant along the Interstate. And from there, the temptations and wonders of the world opened up to her. She’d made a few friends. Had her first beer. Bought an iPhone. Watched cable TV and even went to a movie.
Unfortunately, she was in a bad car accident and had spent the last eight weeks in the Intensive Care Unit. Now all the very injured girl could do was lie back in her hospital bed and wait, hoping, praying, it was time for something for pain. While she recovered, the nurses that cared for her, Peyton and Sydney got to know her better. There were no relapses or setbacks, and all the nurses loved Merritt.
Six weeks after she was dismissed, she was back at her job waiting tables and her life was getting back to normal. Merritt, however, had grown quite attached to her two nurses who showed her there was a new life waiting for her beyond the strict Charismatic religious life she had known. She decided she wanted to know the two nurses outside the hospital and found them at the hang out the nurses talked about all the time.
