Shannon’s husband Kurt misappropriated a large amount of money from his company to cover some stock market losses. He’d been found-out by his boss, Mercedes. In spite of this pickle Kurt was in, it was Mercedes’s suggestion that Shannon attend this convention. As far as Shannon knew, she was the only wife who would be there, and at the company’s expense.
After the first night’s dinner, Mercedes doesn’t wait for Shannon to bring up the elephant in the room. She asks her if Kurt has any ideas on how to solve his problem. She goes on to explain that she has been happy to help him in the past. But something like this could ruin her career as well as Kurt’s, if the crime is discovered. Shannon is speechless.
Then putting the ball in Shannon’s court Mercedes asks if Shannon can think of any reason why Mercedes should take such a risk? After waiting for an answer that didn’t come, Mercedes brings the stark reality to the light. Shannon will need to submit to Mercedes completely; to do whatever she says. And further, if Shannon agrees to service Mercedes the entire weekend, Kurt’s problem will be solved by Monday afternoon.
